Language Exchange
Language Exchange

Language meetings organized by students for students. Through these meetings linguistic exchange is promoted directly, practically and enjoyable. As foreign student you’ll be grouped with a Spanish student and you ‘exchange’ your knowledge about the languages. For example you start speaking an hour in Spanish together and after this hour you change and talk in the language the other one wants to practice. In this way you both learn from talking with each other.

Local festivities

Cabalgata de los Reyes Magos
Cabalgata de los Reyes Magos

The Cabalgata de los Reyes Magos (Three Kings) is a parade of typical floats in some Spanish and Mexican cities, in which the three kings (Melchior, Gaspar and Baltasar) throw balls and candy to the kids who watch from the street. At night the children should go to bed early and the next morning they get gifts which they previously requested in a letter. According to tradition, the children who have misbehaved during the past years receive coals.

Feria de Málaga
Feria de Málaga

This is an event which takes place every year in August. It starts on Friday night at 23.50 at La Playa de la Malagueta with ‘Pregón de la Feria’, the official opening of the festival. This is followed by spectacular fireworks. After this there are 10 days with open air bars, flamenco dancers and much more. One of the most important things is the bullfight festival at Plaza de Toros. During the day there are a lot of activities in the city center. All streets are decorated with paper lanterns, flags and large bouquets of jasmine. Everyone dresses up at their bests to enjoy the festival. The Feria del Dia is from the afternoon until the beginning of the night, until around seven o’clock. Then it is quiet everywhere before the Feria de Noche starts. For the Feria del Noche everyone goes to the festival place a bit outside of the city. Here is a big fair and, as during the day, a lot is happening. There are over 200 marquees especially built for the Feria.

Noche de San Juan
Noche de San Juan

The party that assumes the most prominent in June is the Night of San Juan, on the eve of the 23th; the longest day of the year and the beginning of the summer period. The Night of San Juan is celebrated since time immemorial and celebrates the arrival of the summer solstice. Due to the tilt of Earth’s axis relative to the sun, this day has more hours daylight and many pagan people paid homage to the sun by lighting bonfires around which they danced.

Semana Santa
Semana Santa

The Holy Week in Málaga is one of the biggest events held in the city, from the standpoint of religion and culture. It was declared of International Tourist Interest in 1980. There are processions from Palm Sunday to Good Friday, Holy Saturday until Easter, when the Risen Jesus comes accompanied by a representation of all corporations. As in other cities, in Malaga each procession is usually formed by two thrones (Christ and Virgin) and each is accompanied by penitents (Nazarenes, which can carry candles or appliances, such as rule books, lanterns..) and promises (people who have promised to do penance in exchange for a favor and accompanied to the throne behind the band). Something characteristic of the city is the parade of military units in the processions, as the paratrooper Brigade, the Legion or the Navy.
